I was actually a little afraid to go see -Å“Snow White and the Huntsman-Â, I mean, who could outdo the Disney version so many of us grew up with? But, being a sucker for a good medieval fantasy, I could not resist.
Kristen Stewart as Snow White was a better choice than I had originally thought. My mind kept wandering back to Twilight and how she portrays the very drab character of Bella. I didn't want a heroine like that. But she surprised me quite a bit, the first part of the movie being mostly silent and then blossoming more out of her shell as the ways of the wicked queen gave her some motivation. Something to fight for after having nothing for so long.
Chris Hemsworth makes a wonderful Thor, but what about an ale drinking huntsman trying to bully his way out of every situation? Just from the previews, I was nervous about that one too. I had more faith in Stewart producing a great character than him. I couldn't see him playing the part of anything but the strong, bright and sparkling hero. He is like the Zeus of superheroes in many ways...what about the widowed drunkard now? Well, I must say, I liked him too. I could have named ten different men to play that part before I saw the movie. I don't think I would change it at all if I had the powers to.
Charlize Theron as a queen? Okay, you can say it. I had some objections to their choice in casting. I did feel that she was too modern and could not fit into a medieval queen's persona at all. Maybe because I had just seen her in another movie days before I went to see this one. But I could not get that mentality out of my head. I had set myself up for utter disappointment by this time, yet I felt that she did better than any of the others. This gal has such a strong and commanding presence about her that you completely believe she has these powers she is presenting on the screen, and as the movie kept going, the abilities got more strange. She was mortally afraid of aging, a fear I think a lot of women have. We all do what we think we must to stall it, to find that secret to keeping our youth about us. It is that wicked side that becomes jealous or overly wishful for what nature is taking from us that makes us do the strange and unthinkable, turns us into the Wicked Queen.
I was so happy that the dwarves were there. I didn't see them until almost the very end and even when I did, I was disappointed in the development of their characters. They were fun additions, but they were not the same sort of guys from the story I knew. I did enjoy the fairyland they inhabited and took the Huntsman and Snow White for safety. I absolutely loved the white stag and how he bowed to Snow White.
I agree with Roger Ebert and his review of three and a half stars. In being a fantasy, it was more believable than Stewart's other roles in the -œTwilight- movies have been. -œSnow White and the Huntsman- was full of fantasy, surprises and action. It leaves us feeling as though with enough love and innocent compassion in our hearts, we can change the world.
